Brasov-Ghimbav International Airport is the first newly built airport in Romania for over 20 years and will be operated using a digital tower.

“The installation of the Saab r-TWR at the Brasov-Ghimbav airport, will make them, the second newly constructed airport that is to use a digital tower from day one. This flexible digital solution with a technical platform will support our consortium partners, Brasov Airport and ROMATSA, in the establishment of the first operational digital tower in Romania,“ said Per Ahl, CEO of Saab Digital Air Traffic Solutions

“Operating Brasov-Ghimbay Airport from our centre in Arad will be an important step in our innovation journey at ROMATSA. We foresee that our air traffic controllers will be able to provide services for the airport in a safe, flexible and efficient way. In the consortium and in Saab, we have found a solid and trustworthy supplier to deploy the digital tower. We look forward to the project start and to put the airport in operation,” says Florin Manta, Arad Regional Director of ROMATSA

“The signing of the contract for the provision of air navigation services with Brasov – Ghimbav International Airport is an extremely important moment for the Brasov County public administration. We are practically in flat line with the operation of the airport and it is remarkable that we will benefit from the most advanced technology in the field, which will make operating costs more efficient. The virtual tower is a pioneering solution in Romania, and we are glad that we will implement it for the first time in Brasov. I’m confident that the companies that will develop the navigation services by building the physical infrastructure and installing specific equipment will meet the provisions of the contract within 14 months “, said Adrian Vestea – President of the Brasov County Council.

Saab’s digital tower solution is a breakthrough in air traffic control and was first introduced in Sweden, and has been followed by airports in Sweden, the UK, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and the USA, while also being selected by the Royal Navy for their naval air stations in the UK.
