Brazilian multinational aircraft manufacturer Embraer Defense & Security has announced plans for tie-ups with leading Indian firms with the aim of building planes in the country, notably the C-390 medium transport aircraft.
“We are engaged in talks with four or five Indian companies as part of Embraer’s strategy to enhance its presence in the Indian market and tap into the country’s growing aerospace and defense industry,” said Joao Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security.
It is learnt that Embraer’s is engaged in discussions with both government and private firms such as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the Tata group.
Costa Junior said that the talks focused on the Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) programme and Embraer hoped to finalize and announce its Indian partner before the end of the year. “We are eager to work closely with the chosen Indian partner and add value under the ‘Make in India’ initiative,” he added.
Apart from defense aircraft manufacturing, Embraer could also seek cooperation with the Indian partner for the production of commercial aircraft. “This aligns with Embraer’s broader strategy to establish a strong brand presence in India and potentially leverage the Indian market for its offerings,” said Costa Junior.
Incidentally, the Indian Air Force (IAF) recently issued a Request for Information for a new fleet of 40-80 Medium Transport Aircraft and Embraer’s C-390 Millennium aircraft has been offered as a contender for this program. According to Embraer, the company is committed to establish a significant presence in India, regardless of whether it secures this contract or not.
Meanwhile, Embraer faces stiff competition from major firms such as Lockheed Martin with its C-130J Super Hercules and Airbus Defense and Space with its A400M aircraft for the order.
Still, Embrarer is optimistic about the company’s prospects, having received positive feedback regarding the performance and service of its aircraft already in service in India, said Costa Junior.
