Defence Minister Inaugurates 75 Border Infrastructure Projects

On October 12, 2024, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh virtually dedicated 75 infrastructure projects by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to the nation, amounting to a cost of Rs 2,236 crore. The projects include 22 roads, 51 bridges, and two additional initiatives, spanning across 11 States and Union Territories. Notably, 19 projects are in Jammu & Kashmir, 18 in Arunachal Pradesh, 11 in Ladakh, nine in Uttarakhand, six in Sikkim, five in Himachal Pradesh, two each in West Bengal and Rajasthan, and one each in Nagaland, Mizoram, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

The inauguration took place from the Headquarters of the Trishakti Corps in Sukna, West Bengal, with a significant highlight being the opening of the Kupup-Sherathang Road in Sikkim, which serves as a vital connection between the Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg and the Zuluk axis.

In his address, Rajnath Singh emphasized that these projects reflect the government’s commitment to strengthening border infrastructure and promoting socio-economic development in these regions. He stated that these initiatives will significantly enhance the country’s defence preparedness and contribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat by 2047.’

With the completion of these 75 projects, the BRO has now finalized a total of 111 infrastructure projects in 2024, costing Rs 3,751 crore overall. This includes 36 projects valued at Rs 1,508 crore, such as the advanced Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh, inaugurated by the Prime Minister earlier this year. Last year, the BRO dedicated 125 projects to the nation at a cost of Rs 3,611 crore.

Defence minister praised the dedication and resilience of BRO personnel, who completed these projects in challenging terrains and harsh weather conditions. He highlighted the government’s ongoing commitment to enhancing border infrastructure, backed by an increased allocation of Rs 6,500 crore for the BRO in the Union Budget 2024-25. He expressed optimism that this investment would facilitate strategic infrastructure development and support socio-economic growth in border areas, particularly in the Northeast region.

The virtual inauguration was attended by key military and government officials, including Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, Defence Secretary-designate RK Singh, and the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command, Lt Gen Ram Chander Tiwari. Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang was present at the main site in Sherathang. Governors and Chief Ministers from various states, along with other dignitaries, participated in the event virtually.
